As temperatures outside start to rise, one way to really enjoy the spring weather is with a new patio. Adding a patio to one’s house or remodeling an existing patio is a step that can provide instant enjoyment, as well as greatly increase the value of one’s home in the years to come. Because patios are so large, and often expensive, they should be carefully considered before building.

The location of an outdoor patio is the most basic and perhaps the most important consideration of a new design. It will ultimately determine the amount of use a family will be able to get out of an outdoor space. Factors such as sunlight, wind, and rainfall runoff will either make a space pleasant or unbearable. For more morning usage, place the patio on the east of the house. If you want to use your patio most at night, place it on the western part of your house.

When choosing the material of your patio, it is important to take into consideration the intended usage of the patio. Loose materials, such as gravel, or uneven stones will work as long as the patio doesn’t need to support a table. If you plan on using your patio as a dining area, make sure you stick to solid materials, such as pavers, wood, brick, or flat stones, such as slate. No matter what material you pick, you should always check with a contractor to make sure the foundation area of the patio will support what you intend to build.

Once your patio is complete, your personality can come through. Use patio accessories, such as tables and chairs, to suit the space for your use. Perhaps even consider an outdoor kitchen if you plan on dining and entertaining on your patio. Other accessories, such as plants and landscaping, can really personalize your space. By selecting the right space and the right materials for your patio, you can have a wonderful area outside to enjoy the long spring days and warm weather.
