Patios constructed from plain grey concrete are just, well, plain, while brick patios are warm and inviting. The rich colors and classic look of brick patios gives everyone’s favorite place to relax and enjoy a summer cookout that added touch of class, sophistication, and natural charm.

Brick Patio Materials

The material that is used in the construction of most brick patios and walkways is paving brick. The major difference between paving brick and regular brick is that paving brick is much harder, meaning it is able to handle the stress caused by foot and/or motorized traffic much better. There are two types of paving bricks usually used in the construction of brick patios:

As any knowledgeable patio contractor will tell you, there are numerous advantages of choosing brick for your patio instead of other types of material. One advantage is that brick patios do not require regular maintenance and upkeep. Brick patios are very durable; they can withstand moisture and cold weather better than other materials. Brick patios typically last a long time; just look at buildings that are made of brick to get an idea of just how long-lasting this material is. Unlike materials like asphalt, brick will remain cool to the touch on even the hottest of days, so you’ll never have to worry about your brick patio being off limits because of the heat. A brick patio is fireproof, making it a great choice if the area will be used for cooking or will contain an outdoor fireplace. Finally, brick patios are simply more decorative and attractive than patios constructed of other materials. A patio constructed from rich-red bricks would appeal to most homeowners and guests more than a uniform slab of concrete.

Brick Patio Disadvantages

The major disadvantage of a brick patio is that the material is more expensive than some others. However, many homeowners find the investment worth it because of the fact that brick patios are low maintenance and also add value to homes.

Installing a brick patio is a complex and time-consuming process. Brick patio design and installation involves laying down a base of either flexible material like gravel or sand or rigid material like concrete. The bricks are then placed in their desired pattern on top of this base. Mortar will be used to join the bricks if the base is composed of a rigid material. Either of these methods can be used to construct brick patios that incorporate stunning designs and shapes.
