As summer comes to a close and winter begins, your yard must be protected against the cold weather of winter. Now is the time to observe the following steps and ensure that your yard is in excellent shape next spring.

Trim your grass.

The best length for grass to be left at during the winter is between 2 and 3 inches. This will allow protection from the winter elements without being too long and trapping moisture.

Rake your leaves.

As much as no one likes to do it, raking leaves off your grass is important. The roots of the grass grow throughout the winter and leaves on top will suffocate the roots.

Weed your yard.

If you weed your yard and edge your flower beds now, it will save you the time in the spring. Without weeds, your yard will be ready for new blooms as soon as spring comes.

Plant perennials.

The fall is the best time for planting. If you plant before the first frost, roots will have time to establish themselves and be ready for a strong bloom in the spring.

Cut your trees.

Make sure there are no branches or limbs that could damage your house in the event of a winter storm. A professional arborist can help you determine what limbs should be cut.
