Nothing perks up a yard like a nice garden. When it is done correctly and maintained well it can become the focal point of a landscape. Before you go to your local nursery and start buying every plant and flower you see, there are a few things that you need to know that will help you with the process.

The goal for any garden is to have a balance of every element. It is a good idea to have at least a basic knowledge of landscaping plants and how they will affect not only the rest of your garden but your entire landscape. Most gardens are filled with flowers and landscape plants. There are many varieties of each to choose from and sometimes the choices can be overwhelming.  But keeping afew simple things in mind can be helpful.

	Perennials Perennials are a great choice for any garden. You plant them once and they will come back every year. Keep in mind that many varieties of perennials will multiply every season so make sure you have enough room for them. A big plus for perennials is that they require very little maintenance once they are planted. They need only a minimal amount of water and they are very sturdy. Furthermore they do not require repeated applications of fertilizer. Keep in mind though that it can often take one or two season after the initial planting before yourperennials will show any blooms. But, oncethey do come up they will be well worth the wait.
	Annuals If you are impatient and don’t want to wait for perennials you can always choose toplant the annual variety of flowers. You can plant annuals in the late spring or early summer and they will be almost immediately ready to bloom. You can even purchase annuals that have already bloomed. A major advantage to annual flowers is that they can be changed easily. Every season you can create a different look just by changing what flowers you decide to plant.

Plants

Once you have decided on the flowers for your garden it’s time to tackle the greenery. There are many different types of landscaping plants for you to choose from. Ground cover plants stay close to the ground. They thrive in the shade and along slopes or steep banks. They are also ideal for areas where the soil is shallow and there is not much allowance for grass growth. If you have decided to plant perennial flowers you may want to plant perennial plants as well. Hosta is a very popular variety that is often used because of its wide availability and ease of care.
