The primary function of gutters is to collect rainwater and transport it to a location other than the patio or front yard. This helps preserve landscaping, protects decks and other outdoor structures, and also plays a role in preserving a home’s roof and foundation. Most gutters installed by professionals do provide excellent protection for homes, but owners must still choose between the many different types of gutters available.

Gutter Type: Sectional Gutters

This type of gutter is usually made of small pieces of aluminum or vinyl. Basically, the gutter is constructed on-site. The individual gutter components are fastened together. These gutters have the advantage of being easy to install. Most homeowners would be able to install a sectional gutter on their own. The downside is that because there are seams and joints, these types of gutters tend to leak and collect debris more easily.

Gutter Type: Seamless Gutters

Seamless gutters are most often made of aluminum, although materials like stainless steel and copper are also occasionally used. As the name suggests, there are no seams like there are with sectional gutters. Each gutter section is a continuous piece of material large enough to cover an entire side of the house. These large sections are fastened to downspouts. The major advantage of this gutter type is that they are much less likely to clog or leak. In addition, they have a more attractive appearance. However, installation is a bit more difficult, so be sure to contact a professional gutter contractor if you are considering this type of gutter.

Gutter Type: U-Shape Gutters

U-shape gutters have a smooth, rounded shape and come in a variety of sizes. Gutter diameters are usually between four to six inches. These types of gutters have several advantages. They do not clog frequently and are resistant to corrosion. Their main disadvantage is that they can not handle the same volume of water as other types of gutters.

Gutter Type: K-Shape Gutters

Most gutter installation experts consider k-shape gutters to be the best choice. Compared to U-shape gutters, they can handle more water. The most common diameter of k-shape gutters is five inches. This gutter typeis also preferred because they are less noticeable than U-shape gutters and can blend in with their surroundings quite well.
